Planning a Blog Schedule That Really Works

If you’re like me, you’ve tried blogging schedules and they haven’t worked for you. I find that frustrating because I’m a firm believer in the adage “failing to plan is planning to fail.” So I’m giving it another shot, and think that maybe this time I’ve got a winner!

WordPress recently sent me a recognition award for my first 10 years with them. Wow! It made me happy because I’ve learned a lot, in spite of mistakes. 🙂 And sad, because while I’ve stuck with blogging, in many ways lacked stability. 😦 But I’m working on it. Never, ever give up, right?

Value and credibility

Even minor research shows that readers usually look for two main things in a blog. They want value and credibility. Now value, of course, is subjective. I personally find no value in a sports blog, no matter how great it may be.

So clearly we follow content we relate to, but I’ve learned that we also follow blogs we feel we can trust. It’s human nature to like things we can count on.

Which is why, in my ongoing effort to build stability and reliability, I’ve created a blog schedule. But also because I feel that you – my faithful readers – deserve that! (Keep in mind that it’s still in the trial phase and may need tweaking.) I’ll be posting on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, as the Lord enables. Leaving Tuesdays and Thursdays for other blog-related tasks.

So why are schedules important?

A good schedule can help both bloggers and readers! And here’s how…

  • Stay focused on your goals.
  • Get organized.
  • Alleviate writer’s block.
  • Keep you from feeling overwhelmed.
  • Be more consistent.
  • And write more creatively – because consistency boosts creativity.

That said, how often should a blogger post?

I’ve learned that it’s important to not overwhelm yourself or your readers. Blogging is a great community where we get to know our regular readers. We get a feel for what they like and might be able to manage, timewise. And remember, yours probably isn’t the only blog they read.

Tips for a doable schedule:

  • Start small – you can always expand later on.
  • Keep it simple so you’ll be able to stick to it longterm.
  • Don’t attempt to post so frequently that you suffer burnout.
  • Likewise, don’t post so infrequently, that your blog seems dead.
  • Don’t overwhelm your readers.
  • Set aside time for extra blogging-related tasks. (Many bloggers must also tend to backups, plugins, analytics, etc.)

OK, so a schedule can help you as a blogger. But what about your readers??

What blog schedules offer readers:

  • Knowing what to expect and when.
  • A more reliable, consistent, and predictable blog.
  • Better content as you become more steadfast and diligent in creating it.
  • Greater engagement, because increased organization could create more time for you to visit and engage with their blogs.
